American Academy of Family Physicians
The American Academy of Family Physicians is the national association of family doctors. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 94,000 members in 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. Until October 3, 1971, it was known as the American Academy of General Practice. The name was changed in order to reflect more accurately the changing nature of primary health care.
The Academy was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public.

American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the national medical society representing more than 6,700 physicians who are specialists in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. They are called physiatrists (fizz ee at' trists).
Physiatrists focus on restoring function. They care for patients with acute and chronic pain, and musculoskeletal problems like back and neck pain, tendonitis, pinched nerves and fibromyalgia. They also treat people who have experienced catastrophic events resulting in paraplegia, quadriplegia, or traumatic brain injury; and individuals who have had strokes, orthopedic injuries, or neurologic disorders such as multiple sclerosis, polio, or ALS.

American Medical Director's Association
AMDA is a democratic organization governed by a Board of Directors that is elected by a House of Delegates, with delegates from 41 state chapters. In 1992, AMDA joined the House of Delegates of both the American Medical Association and the American Society of Internal Medicine and was recognized as a specialty society of these organizations.
Although the association's name reveals its origins, the reality is that AMDA has always served the interests of both medical directors and attending physicians. Because the vast majority of medical directors also serve as attending physicians, their issues have been inextricably woven into all of the association's activities.
